bob240964 Less is more Profil : aRootsien(e) de verre | Hi everyone,
Could anyone help me find floor plans (and elevations) of Mentmore Towers, the castle built around 1850 by Joseph Paxton, the architect of London's Crystal Palace for baron Rothschild.
It then was the property of the Beatles guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and now of Simon Halibi who wants to have it refurbished into a hotel. It's never been accessible to anyone - we passed by 5 years ago - unless you mean to shoot a movie there (Eyes wide shut, Batman begins, an episode of Inspector Morse, ...).
I contacted Buckinghamshire's local administration, then EPR who are in charge of the refurbishment, then the other company (can't remember the name right now) that's in charge of the site around. No answer.
Thanks a million for your help.
Bob

seham abdelmalek Profil : aRootsien(e) de bois | The Crystal Palace was a cast iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park, London, England, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in the Palace's 990,000 square feet of exhibition space to display examples of the latest technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,850 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 108 feet (33 m).[1]
After the exhibition, the building was moved to a new park in a high, healthy and wealthy area of London called Sydenham Hill, an area not much changed today from the well-heeled suburb full of large Victorian villas that it was during its Victorian heyday. The Crystal Palace was enlarged and stood from 1854 until 1936, when it was destroyed by fire. It attracted many thousands of visitors from all levels of society. The name Crystal Palace (coined by the satirical magazine Punch)[2] was later used to denote this area of south London and the park that surrounds the site, home of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

bob240964 Less is more Profil : aRootsien(e) de verre | Thanks Seham. The Crystal Palace is (was) indeed a fantastic building, given the technical possibilities in the 19th century, and I had had the opportunity to find some pieces of information while looking for Paxton's work. What I actually was looking for is drawings of Mentmore Towers he built in Buckinghamshire. But thanks anyway for your help. Kind regards/Bob |
